San Francisco is not without it's charmless areas, but the ease with which some of the worthwhile but disparate shopping areas can be woven together is actually remarkable, especially be car.  Partially agree with you on Mayor Newsom - however again this is subject to what your driver showed you, but wholeheartedly agree with you on the business climate being utterly unfriendly.
